What to Do Immediately After Spilling Liquid on Your Laptop
Accidentally spilling liquid on your laptop can be quite nerve-wracking; however, taking quick and careful steps will make all the difference. Here is a short guide on what you should do immediately to avoid permanent damage and hopefully save your laptop.
First of all, you need to power off your laptop. If this is connected to power, disconnect it, then press and hold the power button until it powers off. This will help to avoid short circuits that may burn up the internal components.
Next, disconnect everything from the laptop: USB drives, headphones, power cables, and all other accessories. Liquids can seep through these connectors and create more problems.
Tilt the laptop to allow liquid to drain from the keyboard and away from the internal parts. Place it upside-down in a "V" shape, with screen and keyboard facing down, to facilitate as much drainage as possible. Keep in mind that you need to tilt the laptop in such a way that liquids are not moving toward the screen.
If your laptop has a removable battery, carefully take it out to kill power supply entirely. Again, not all laptops have this feature, so you may want to look at your manual for this-or just skip the step altogether.
Gently pat the keyboard, touchpad, and outer casing with a dry microfiber cloth to absorb the visible moisture. Avoid being too aggressive in scrubbing; this would likely force liquid further into the laptop. After patting dry, leave the laptop open and in a well-ventilated area to air out.
It's very tempting to try quick fixes, putting it in rice, or using a hairdryer. However, these quick fixes often do more harm than good. Hair dryers may actually force liquid deeper inside the laptop, and rice can't reach all the places that would be affected. Therefore, it is best to stay with air drying, with seeking a professional if necessary.
Wait for at least 24-48 hours before you try turning the laptop on; that will give any remaining liquid a chance to evaporate. If the spill had sticky stuff in it, such as coffee or soda, then it would be good if you got it professionally cleaned, as the residuals may cause corrosion.
Of course, immediate action right after the spill can stop further damage, but for a proper cleaning and assurance, professional repair is the route to go.
