Mac Sound Not Working? Here’s How to Fix It!
Do you experience audio problems on your Mac? Whether it is not making a peep from internal speakers, its volume buttons are grayed out, or nothing in particular is emitting any sound at all, this is actually quite a common problem that normally can be fixed quite easily. Here's how to troubleshoot audio problems on Mac and get it up and running again.
Let's start with the obvious:
Open System Settings: Go to System Settings > Sound.
Select Output Device: Under the Output tab, Internal Speakers-or whatever should be checked-is to be checked.
Adjust Volume: Check the volume isn't muted, and move the slider right to turn it up.
Often, this will fix the problem just by resetting the settings here.
Core Audio is responsible for managing sound in macOS. Restarting this often will fix the problem with sound:
1. Open Activity Monitor: Go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.
2. Locate Coreaudiod: In the search bar, type coreaudiod to locate it.
3. Quit Coreaudiod: Select and click the X to quit. Core Audio automatically respawns, which may cure sound problems without a restart on your Mac.
NVRAM-or PRAM if you have an older Mac-is a place used to store settings such as the sound volume. It may become corrupted and require a reset:
1. Shut Down Your Mac.
2. Turn It Back On: Immediately after turning on your Mac, keep pressing Option + Command + P + R.
3. Release After 20 Seconds: When you hear the boot chimes or see the Apple logo flash for the second time, it means NVRAM has been reset.
If you use headphones, external speakers, or Bluetooth devices, these may be interfering devices:
1. Disconnect External Audio Devices: Disconnect any headphones, external speakers, or USB devices.
2. Turn Off Bluetooth: Go to System Settings > Bluetooth, and toggle it off so you know that sound is not being rerouted to any Bluetooth device.
Software updates frequently contain fixes for bugs that could be affecting sound:
1. Go to System Settings: Under Software Update, follow any on-screen instructions to locate available updates.
2. Install Updates: If an update is available, install it, and restart your Mac.
Safe Mode will reduce the number of nonessential startup items and can sometimes give you a clue about whether third-party software is the cause of your sound problem:
1. Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key.
2. Release the Shift Key when you are presented with the login screen that reads "Safe Boot."
3. Try Sound: If the sound works in Safe Mode, restart your Mac in normal mode. The problem may be caused by third-party software that does not load in Safe Mode.
If none of the steps above help you troubleshoot the issue, it is probably likely going to be a hardware problem. Less severe failures of audio hardware can be diagnosed and repaired by Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
